Annual Convention Highlights
The 2008 NAIFA-PA Annual Convention took place May 12-14 at the Hilton Harrisburg. “Kick It Up!” was the theme of this year’s convention as the event provided an opportunity to recognize the accomplishments of the past year. - 2008-2009 NAIFA-PA President Randall Kaufmann accepted the gavel from 2007-2008 President Albert Heiles, CLU, ChFC, LUTCF. Kaufmann, special agent with Prudential Financial in Camp Hill, takes office on July 1, 2008.
- Jason Muskey, LUTCF, CLTC, CSA, of Moosic was elected NAIFA-PA Secretary for 2008-2009. Others elected included:, William P. Krause, CLU, ChFC, of Allentown, President-Elect; Joseph Marrazzo Jr. of Harrisburg, Vice President; John C. Hynes, LUTCF, of North Huntingdon, Robert Donlan of Altoona, Darrell Westby, CFP, of Mechanicsburg, and Frank Lazarus, CLU, ChFC, CASL of Bala Cynwyd, Regional Vice Presidents, and Kathleen Niedermayer of Altoona, Tracy Rush of Chambersburg and Brad Small of Reading, Directors.
- NAIFA-PA’s highest honor, the Keystone Award, was presented to Walter Olshanski, CIC, LUTCF. Olshanski, served as NAIFA-PA’s 1998-1999 President and served as the first moderator for Pennsylvania’s Leadership in Life Institute (LILI).
- NAIFA-PA’s Scott Jackson VIP (Very Important Pennsylvanian) Award was presented to Tom Miller of NAIFA-Lehigh Valley. Miller was honored for his many years of service to his local association, which included serving as secretary and membership chair, and for his involvement in his local’s many charitable activities.
- The 2008 Keystone Foundation Scholarship was presented to Nicole Wertz of Erie. Nicole is a 2008 graduate of McDowell High School and plans to study special education at Edinboro University. The first-ever silent auction to benefit the Keystone Foundation raised more than $1,200.
- The NAIFA-PA Humanitarian Award was presented to RJ Harris, morning radio personality with WHP Radio in Harrisburg. He was recognized for his involvement in many charitable activities, including Special Olympics, the Arthritis Walk and the Rally for the Troops.
- The Leadership in Life Institute (LILI) Class of 2008 was honored at graduation ceremonies. This year’s LILI graduates are: Douglas Darling, AIR (Greater Harrisburg), Jan Hartman (NAIFA-PA), Charlotte Hartmann-Hansen, CLU, ChFC, CLTC, LUTCF (Lehigh Valley), Carina Hatfield (Tri-County), Christine Pikutis-Musuneggi (Pittsburgh), Robert N. Rust III (Lehigh Valley) and Rosanne Schaefer, CSA (Reading).
- Ilona Nickels, C-SPAN political commentator, delivered the keynote address, “Unlocking the Mystery of Washington Politics.” Nickels gave some insight on the inner workings of Congress and its committees, as well as provided the attendees with some tips on how they can communicate more effectively with their Senators and Representatives.
- Jeffrey Taggart, CLU, ChFC, LUTCF, NAIFA President, delivered a speech on “The State of NAIFA.” Taggart brought attendees up to date on the “NAIFA in the 21st Century” strategic plan. New programs include a professional development system, which has five components: NAIFA Professional Programs, NAIFA Professional Practice Tools & Tips, NAIFA Preferred Providers, NAIFA Networks, and NAIFA Speaker Center. - A panel discussion on “Hot Topics in Insurance Legislation and Regulation in Pennsylvania” brought together representatives from the PA Insurance Department to discuss the latest insurance-related developments on the state level.
- A half-day Advisors Advancement Workshop brought the following speakers to the podium: Dan Allison, speaking on “The Money Code;” Susan Marino of Van Eck Global, speaking on “The Investment Case for Hard Assets;” Michael Coffey of Legg Mason, speaking on “Delivering High Net Worth Events,” and Chris Hedges of MFS Invedstment Management, speaking on “Milestone Marketing.” PA Insurance Commission Joel Ario and other officials from his department conducted a question-and-answer session during the workshop.
Prudential Financial was the Platinum Sponsor of this year’s convention. Van Eck Global was the Silver Sponsor of the convention. LeggMason and MFS Investment Management were the Bronze Sponsors of the convention.
NAIFA-PA Dues to Increase by $10 in January
Delegates to the May NAIFA-PA Annual Convention approved a dues increase of $10 for all renewals and new memberships beginning January 1, 2009. NAIFA-PA’s Board of Directors and Finance Committee determined the increase is necessary to continue current operations. NAIFA-PA will continue to be careful stewards of your dues dollars and will continue to seek efficiencies in our operations.
Board Approves Voluntary Assessment for External Marketing
The NAIFA-PA Board of Directors also approved a voluntary assessment of $10 per member to be used for external marketing of NAIFA-PA. Funds collected from individuals and local associations will be used to purchase billboards that will promote NAIFA-PA to the general public and insurance industry. Stay tuned for more information.

NAIFA Convention News
June 27 is the early registration deadline for the NAIFA Annual Convention. This year’s event will be held September 6-10 in San Diego.
Here is the schedule of mandatory meetings for NAIFA-PA delegates:
-Saturday, September 6- NAIFA-PA Orientation Meeting- 2-3 PM – casual dress
-Monday, September 8 - NAIFA-PA State Assembly – 2:30-5 PM – convention unform
-Wednesday, September 10 - NAIFA-PA Caucus Breakfast - 6:45-7:45 AM – convention uniform
-Wednesday, September 10- NAIFA General Session – 8-11 AM – convention uniform

Allan Hancock Chosen to Receive NAIFA’s Highest Honor
Allan G. Hancock, CLU, ChFC, AEP, president and CEO of The Hancock Group, Inc., Altoona, has been named the recipient of the 67th annual John Newton Russell Memorial Award, the highest honor bestowed by the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA). The award recognizes sustained and meritorious service to the life insurance and financial advising industries. Hancock will receive the honor at a gala event during NAIFA’s Annual Convention and Career Conference, September 9. His many years of service to NAIFA include having served as president of NAIFA (then the National Association of Life Underwriters) in 1994-95 and president of NAIFA-PA (then the Pennsylvania Association of Life Underwriters) in 1973-74.
