A message from David L. Barrist, 2014-2015 NAIFA-PA President:
It is an honor and pleasure to serve as President of NAIFA- Pennsylvania for the 2014-2015 year. Believe it or not, I am the first President to hail from the Greater Philadelphia Association since Irv Tanenbaum in 1996-1997. Granted, Ed Auble and Michael Gates did follow. At the times of their Presidencies, Ed was a member of Chester County AIFA and Michael from Bucks. Both would now be members of the merged Delaware Valley Region which became NAIFA- Greater Philadelphia. Regardless, as a representative of Pennsylvania’s largest Local Association and metropolitan area, I am excited to travel the State and interact with our members. NAIFA passion comes from areas of all sizes; urban, suburban, rural, etc.
From the day that I was elected Secretary of NAIFA- Pennsylvania in May of 2011, I let it be known that ADVOCACY would be the focus of my Presidential year. Our industry and livelihood have never been more threatened than today. Many government officials call the tax advantage to our products “lost tax revenue.” Only forty percent of the members of US Congress have a background in business. It is OUR responsibility to educate before they adversely legislate.
It is a goal of my Presidency to visit all eighteen of NAIFA- Pennsylvania’s Local Associations. I want to sit in on Board meetings and participate in Membership functions. It is important to learn how each association can share ideas, speakers, resources, etc. No matter how big or small; shared ideas, successes and challenges will help NAIFA- PA grow and thrive.
As most know, I am very passionate about hockey. I have been a player, coach, and rabid Flyers fan for most of my life. Much like hockey, on the NAIFA- PA team, I wear the Captain’s “C.” I am the leader, but absolutely nothing without a strong team around me. Our Executive Committee and Board of Directors are second-to-none. We will be in constant communication, both in person and on conference calls, throughout the year. I am confident that everyone will be on the same bus and prepared to drive in the right direction.
If I am the team “Captain,” then our “Coach,” Jan Hartman, is the master tactician. I have served on Boards of many charities and non-profits. Never have I worked with a more selfless and hardworking Executive Vice President than Jan Hartman. Presidents, Directors, and Officers come and go. The one constant is the staff. The best compliment that I can give Jan is that he treats NAIFA- Pennsylvania as if it is his own family business. With Jan and Grace Gilbert running the day to day operations, we as leaders can focus on long term goals and projects.
I manage a family-owned life brokerage agency. I am well-aware that if someone calls or emails you today; that’s when they want an answer. If you have a question, concern or suggestion; call or email anytime. I have been elected to this position by the members of NAIFA- Pennsylvania. I owe it to my constituents stay in contact and engage in dialogue. Since 2015 is not a leap year, I only get three hundred and sixty five days to be President. Each one must count. In closing, I challenge every member of NAIFA- Pennsylvania to get engaged. Recruit a member, or members. Donate to our political action committee. Establish a relationship with a State Representative or Senator. If your “job” is really a “career,” doesn’t it make sense to get involved and protect your livelihood? I am the second generation in a family agency. I sincerely hope that my involvement in NAIFA will help protect our industry and it will be thriving for my children to succeed me at Barrist Insurance Group.
My name is David Barrist. I am proud to be YOUR President and look forward to meeting EVERYONE this year.
